So what else is new.
As a Bond fan I was very pissed when "You light up my Life"
beat a much better song "Nobody does it better"
and ditto for "ARTHUR" beating "For Your Eyes Only"
Funny thing how Carole Bayer etc wrote both NDIB and Arthur

I'm glad you said it first. The duo also performed at the Spirit Awards.

Of the three Menken songs, I liked the clean-up song (Adams) the best.
They were all derivitive of other works and, musically, far from
Menken's best (and I like Menken a lot.) Who *was* the punk
caterwalling on the "Beauty & the beast" knock-off ballad? That was
just painful.
Of the five performances last night, I actually liked the gospel one
the best.
I picked up the DVD of ONCE the other week. Will have to watch it now.
Perhaps I'll like the winning song better in context.
But Cotillard won. Yeah! and LA VIE EN ROSE won for makeup. Yea again!
And TRANSFORMERS *didn't* win special effects. |

I don't have much to say about the winning song, as the first and only
time I'd heard it was last night. But I was kind of happy they won, as
the guitarist was featured in "The Committments," one of my favorite
movies of all time (I recognized him when he was performing last
night), and it was nice to see that one of the unknowns from that
terrific movie made such good. Also, I thought it was very classy of
Jon Stewart to bring the girl back on after the commercial for her to
make a speech, since she didn't get to say anything before the
orchestra played them off.
On the other hand, now I really want to see "Enchanted," though the
guy singing the song at the dance was really terrible.
Cheers!

It was Jon McLaughlin, who sang the song in the film, as well. I didn't
care for it then, either. I would have nominated "True Love's Kiss"
instead. I went to high school with Alan, so I really wanted him to win.

Ummm.... There were four other unknowns from "The Commitments" that made
it really big, you know.

True, but this one, if possible, is worse.

Andrea Corr ("Sharon Rabbitte"), her brother Jim, and her sisters Sharon
and Caroline (who appear in the movie as a country-western band) are
"The Corrs". They never really cracked the US market, though they had a
fair-sized hit with "Breathless", but, in the rest of the world, their
unusual blend of pop and céilidh took them to Beatles-like heights. At
the moment, the band is on hiatus, while Jim, Sharon, and Caroline deal
with six (at last count) babies, but Andrea did a solo album in 2007,
sounding surprisingly like Suzanne Vega. She's also done some more
acting since "The Commitments": she was in "Evita" (though Madonna
swiped her only song), and she's done several indies.
The best introduction is probably the DVD of their 1998 St. Patrick's
Day concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

I didn't think so, actually. "My Heart Will Go On" is entirely plastic
and absolutely fake; this song, on the other hand, I found genuinely
touching.

I've heard a version by a group of drunk Russian sailors which is pretty
funny... It was doing the rounds on the internet many years ago.
