I wouldn't call "Atonement" a surprise (it had a significantly better
critical reaction in Britain than in the States). It wasn't
necessarily the front-runner, despite the huge number of nominations,
but it wasn't an upset, though I personally thought that "The Lives of
Others" was the best of the Best Film nominees (I also thought that
Ulrich Muhe's performance in it was the best of the leading actor
nominations by far, though he was never going to win); "Atonement" has
had enough of an international impact and had enough awards momentum
that it was actually a better contender for Best Film than for Best
British Film, for which it was also nominated. And "This Is England",
which won Best British Film, is remarkable, though very bleak.

Cotillard is a very deserving winner. It's an amazing performance -
and, yes, her win was a major surprise. In the supporting actress
category, the performance that stood out for me was Saoirse Ronan, who
is stunningly good in "Atonement" in a role that I think is probably
far more difficult than it looks.

Yes. "This Is England" and "The Lives of Others" looked interesting.

If you haven't seen "The Lives of Others", rent it NOW. Don't let the
fact that it's a) very, very sombre, with no comic relief at all, and
b) entirely in German put you off. It's the best film I saw last year,
and it would be an extraordinary achievement in any year. The three
central performances are quite brilliant, and it's incredibly moving.

Agreed again, altthough I didn't enjoy the film overall - thought it was
a bit of a mess. And apparently Cotillard can sing, but yet they chose
to overdub Piaf, which I don't think was a good idea.

She was brilliant, yes!

Agreed. This Is England is also excellent although may not have a lot
of appeal abroad.

Piaf had one of the most instantly recognizable voices in history, and
I'm sure that works doubly so for the French. I don't think they had
much of a choice but to overdub her.

I liked it in the theatre and just got the DVD and watched it again. I
think I like it even more now even though some of the narrative
devices still don't work for me and I'm not sure why they blacked out
all of WWII from the story.

What are the chances of an Oscar upset?
And is the "Supporting Actress" category now a four way race?
