Interesting piece in today's Guardian about the fact that the trailer
for "Sweeney Todd" conspicuously fails to mention the fact that it's a
musical:
http://film.guardian.co.uk/features/featurepages/0,,2252544,00.html
As we've noted here before, it's hardly the first recent movie musical
to be marketed that way.

Saw the Dutch commercial this evening for the first time (the movie opens
thursday). It's not anything like the US-trailers. The movie it's marketed
as 'Johnny Depp's new movie'. Although some singing can be heard and seen,
there's no mention of it being a musical.

There was, as the article noted, absolutely no mention of it being a
musical in the British trailers either. Just like "Dreamgirls" (the
trailer for "Dreamgirls" did feature singing, but made it look as if
the only singing in the film was going to be onstage performance
numbers).

I can't imagine marketing it as a musical would have gotten a significantly
larger audience vs. those who might be turned off by knowing it's a musical.
I don't think anyone who enjoys musicals (onstage or off) wasn't aware of
the film. |

I think the point, though, is sort of the reverse of that - people who
aren't aware of the stage version, a group which more or less
certainly outnumbers people who *are*, would not have been aware from
the film's marketing campaign that it was a musical.

I suppose, but it's perfecly legitimate not to like musicals, and I
can certainly understand someone who didn't like musicals who went to
see this particular film after seeing the trailer being somewhat
annoyed.

True, but this is not really your typical "stop and sing" musical -
hopefully more viewers wound up appreciating the movie for what is was than
those who were turned off by the singing. As to the misleading advertising
(omission at worst), I find it less consequential than GWB campaigning in
2000 as a "compassionate conservative." (I suppose that would be akin to
Sweeney campaigning as a "compassionate advocate of population control.")
Of course, I suppose there's no excuse for falling for GWB's rhetoric, while
the same people would have had less of a clue that the ST movie had singing
in it. |

Remember ads for TV production of Gypsy starring Bette were that way
too.

Reminds me of old TV listing for movie 1776 that said it portrayed
Founding Fathers as "a bunch of prancing nebbishes" etc. and concluded
"As if that weren't enough, it's also a musical."
Or, I'm still pondering Leonard Maltin's negative review of Bizet's
Carmen starring Julia Migenes and Placido, in which Maltin concludes
"Might be of interest to opera fans."

How about the film (don't recall the title) with Nick Nolte where all
the musical numbers were cut?

In Britain, actually, that had a limited theatrical release, and the
trailer made it clear that it was a musical.
(And it worked considerably better on a big screen than it does on TV)

It's hard to underestimate broadcast TV audiences. Maybe enough people
know Gypsy is a musical, and maybe, of those, half know it's a musical
they want to see, but the vast majority want these sleazy "reality"
shows, and get them.
