Susan, thanks for posting this... sounds like a VERY interesting line-
up.

As always, I question the very loose use of the word "Star" but it
sounds like a promising season. DWTS sure beats SYTYCD and especially
the new DANCE WARS show in my book.

Penn on DWTS? What fun! I've seen Penn & Teller live but I get them
confused, I'm assuming he's the one that talks, LOL. Can you imagine
him and Adam Corollo in the green room? LOL.. talk about some fresh
biting satire. And Marlee Matlin... very courageous for her to do this
show, it will be interesting to see how her pro, whoever that is,
handles training/teaching/working with her.. Priscilla Presley, OTOH..
bet she's hoping that no one steps on her blue suede shoes (sorry, but
i couldn't resist, LOL).

Opening bets, anyone? I'm tempted to put Kristi Yamaguchi as a front-
runner before the season even stars.

Huh? Trish, I have great respect for you and what you've done in the
dance community, but I don't see how you can possibly make that claim.
Are we that less addicted to celebrity culture up here or is it
something else? I'm not THAT much younger than you. Maybe it's a
Mars/Venus thing?

I can see both shows having a certain number of contestants trying to
push their boundaries (and either failing or succeeding) and DWTS
appealing more to the mass market because of the celebrity angle and
because their level of dance seems more achievable. But as a dance
teacher I would have thought you would have appreciated more the overall
higher level of dance achieved (in a greater variety of different
styles) by the SYTYCD model. What choreography I have seen in the little
DWTS I've managed to watch looked almost sick (and not in a good way)
compared to most of the SYTYCD choreography. Mia Michaels has brought to
life some incredible visions and they have some other excellent
choreographers on the show as well.

So, please explain to me what you see that I might be missing?

Cheers,

Paul-Andre

Hi, Paul-Andre -

Thanks for the compliments and all but I think the only thing you
missed was part of my statement, LOL., the part that read, 'in my
book." I honestly wasn't trying to make a claim or statement of fact,
it was only my opinion.

As to why I favor DWTS over SYTYCD, I wish I could give you some real
step-by-step reasons but I can't. It really has nothing to do with the
celebrity aspect since sometimes I don't even know some of the so-
called celebs.

DWTS just appeals to me more. Maybe it's because it completely focuses
on partner dancing and that's where my heart lies. Maybe I feel the
celebrity contestants often come from complete non-dance backgrounds
as opposed to the SYTYCD show where everyone is already a good dancer
and I appreciate that challenge and struggle. Maybe I like some of the
reoccuring pros on the show. I don't know. Apples, oranges, bananas.
It's just taste I suppose. All I know is I rarely miss an episode of
DWTS whereas the most I ever got drawn into SYTYCD was when Benji was
on the show.

Do I think DWTS is perfect? No, of course not. Sometimes I really
question the music choices, sometimes I want to slap Carrie Ann upside
the head for her (IMO) stupid, inane comments, LOL, and yes, there IS
some bad dancing on there from time to time. All that doesn't change
the fact that I will find time to watch DWTS but when it comes to
SYTYCD, I'm like.."Oh, well."

And, to tell you the truth, since you brought up Mia Michaels, I'll
'fess up and admit that I don't always get her choreography. Color me
blind or whatever, but I just don't. I can recognize and even
appreciate the beauty, the artistry, the complexity but often times I
just don't understand it, it doesn't move me emotionally. Sorry.

Go figure. Your mileage obviously varies, LOL. And good talking to
you!

:^))
