Dan Gross | Rap with a religious pedigreeIF RECORD sales are any
indication, you can never go wrong in hip-hop by rhyming about guns,
drugs, groupies and your crew.
But local rapper J. Dyn isn't interested in those things, and he says
the only person he needs in his posse is Jesus Christ.
J. Dyn is formally known as Jonathan Mendte, son of CBS3 anchor Larry
Mendte. The 22-year-old CAPA graduate is currently recording his debut
album for Total Grace, a Christian label.
J. Dyn calls his music a "hip-hop-rock crossover" and is planning a
summer tour of Christian colleges with the band Eternity Now.
The musician, on a break from West Chester University, declined to
discuss what denomination of Christianity he follows, saying, "It's
all about a relationship with God," not labels. "It's about being a
good person and having a good relationship with Jesus."
J. Dyn hopes his music will appeal to Christians and non-Christians as
he doesn't stick to only religious themes, but says the message in his
songs is "you're never alone."
