For an upcoming show, I need to provide a 2.5 ft dia moon lit within itself
and supported by baton. The moon will be in front of cyc and so a square
moon box is not acceptable. I wanted to avoid 80-90 ft of electric wire for
the light by installing a battery powerd light, but there is a problem. The
moon has to be on for more than two hours, so we may not have enough battery
power. I would appreciate any suggestion on;
1. material for the front surface.
2. placement of lights
3. construction design
4. any new approach to the problem. The director does not like Gobo
approach.

We have found that large paper chinese lanterns work well. They are
lightweight, and a very small light source inside creates the moon
glow effect. Some care is needed to avoid damaging the paper. Good
luck with your project.

This reply is probably far too late and the idea will have occurred to you
anyway. How about a suitably filtered LED cluster as a light source?
They'd last well over the 2 hours of the show.
What is or was your solution?
