|
|
I saw "No Country for Old Men" today, but wasn't impressed. Before it
started, the audience was treated to some movie trivia on the movie screen,
two items of which I can share, neither of great difficulty (especially for
ratm).
Here's the second: Who is the only person to win an Oscar whose parents
(both of them) also were Oscar winners?
This one's no doubt old hat for ratm (or, as the kids say, SO old hat) that
it should be in an ratm FAQ.

Liza Minnelli. Vincente Minnelli won a Best Director Oscar for "Gigi",
and Judy Garland won an Academy Juvenile Award in, I think, 1939.

love the way they try to re-write history by saying anyone who is given
a special award is a winner
Liza Minnelli has never won a Grammy
Barbra Streisand has never won a Tony
Judy Garland has never won an Oscar |

Judy Garland never . . . . What? The movie screen lied when it said, Liza,
Judy, and Vincente were all Oscar winners?!
I'll never again trust the printed word on a movie screen.

But Streisand received a Tony and Garland received an Academy Award.

she should have won an Oscar
for A STAR IS BORN
---------------------------------
Perhaps she kept a few too many people waiting. And then there's Bacall. |

"babs got two Oscars......
and one was a special Oscar"
WRONG
her second Oscar was for songwriting
A STAR IS BORN "Evergreen" ?
and she won that - and - somebody lost
she was given a special TONY
so that makes her a Tony 'winner"
if you insist !! |

Judy lost to Grace Kelly
-----------------------------------
Older men with hope voted for Grace after she slept with all her mature
co-stars. Imagine: a slim, gorgeous, classy blonde with a father
fixation. And that sexy Drama School accent! |

Well, Grace Kelly was awfully good in Country Girl...

Ah, but I have since learned that Judy DID win an "Oscar" ("Oscar" in
quotes) after all: It was, yes, one of those "special Oscars," here an
"Honorary Juvenile Award" that is no longer given out
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Juvenile_Award) in 1939 "for her
outstanding performance as a screen juvenile during the past year."
So the Loewe's movie screen I saw this on wasn't totally off the mark.
